gardeners!

WBTC got you into defi. At some point you want out, back to real Bitcoin on the main chain. Options route you through wrapped intermediates, liquidity pools, or a long wait before native BTC finally shows up. Garden makes it easy, WBTC in, native Bitcoin out, one atomic swap, in 30 seconds.

WBTC routes on Garden

WBTC has been around since 2018 and remains the largest wrapped Bitcoin in defi. Around 116,000 BTC sits wrapped today, roughly $9 billion at current prices, spread across lending markets, DEX pools, and collateral positions. Most of it lives on Ethereum mainnet, but the supply has drifted outward over the years. Getting in is the easy part. Unwrapping through the official route is limited to approved merchants, so for everyone else the exit runs through a bridge, and most bridges route you through intermediate tokens and liquidity pools before native BTC reaches your wallet.

Garden supports WBTC to native BTC from Ethereum, Arbitrum, and Starknet, each as a single atomic swap. We pulled live quotes for 1 WBTC on each route and lined them up against other bridges offering the same swap.

WBTC on Ethereum to BTC

The classic route. Most WBTC lives on Ethereum mainnet, and this is the direct path out. Connect your wallet, pick WBTC on Ethereum as source and BTC as destination, paste your Bitcoin address, and swap.

You send You receive Minimum received Time
Symbiosis 1 WBTC 0.998 BTC 0.978 BTC 1 min - 19 min
Garden 1 WBTC 0.998 BTC 0.998 BTC ~30 sec
Chainflip 1 WBTC 0.994 BTC 0.969 BTC 7 min
SimpleSwap 1 WBTC 0.984 BTC Not guaranteed ~30 min

Look at the minimum received column. Garden is the only bridge where the quote and the guarantee are the same number.

WBTC on Arbitrum to BTC

If your WBTC sits on Arbitrum, there's no need to bridge back to Ethereum first. Garden swaps WBTC on Arbitrum directly to native Bitcoin, skipping the extra hop and the eth gas entirely. On this exact quote, the app showed 19 minutes 30 seconds and $131 saved versus the next route.

You send You receive Minimum received Time
Garden 1 WBTC 0.997 BTC 0.997 BTC ~30 sec
Symbiosis 1 WBTC 0.996 BTC 0.976 BTC 1 min - 19 min
SimpleSwap 1 WBTC 0.975 BTC Not guaranteed ~30 min
Chainflip Asset not supported - - -

Garden leads outright here on rate, guarantee, and speed.

WBTC on Starknet to BTC

Bitcoin can exit Starknet defi straight to the main chain. Connect your Starknet wallet, pick WBTC on Starknet as source and BTC as destination, and receive native Bitcoin without touching Ethereum in between.

You send You receive Minimum received Time
Garden 1 WBTC 0.997 BTC 0.997 BTC ~30 sec
Symbiosis Route not supported - - -
Chainflip Route not supported - - -
SimpleSwap Route not supported - - -

This one isn't close. Garden is the only bridge that takes WBTC on Starknet directly to native Bitcoin.

Security

Garden's WBTC to BTC bridge runs on Hashed Timelock Contracts. Your WBTC and the solver's native BTC lock behind the same hash, and revealing one secret settles both legs. Either the whole swap completes or everything refunds automatically. No partial execution, no stuck funds, no validators or multisigs.

Our contracts are continuously audited by external security researchers including Trail of Bits, Zellic, and OtterSec, with full audit history at garden.finance/security

FAQs

Is WBTC the same as Bitcoin?

No. WBTC is an ERC-20 token backed 1:1 by Bitcoin held in custody by BitGo. It tracks Bitcoin's price and is redeemable for BTC, but holding it means trusting the custodian. Native BTC on the Bitcoin blockchain has no such dependency.

Can I convert WBTC to BTC without KYC or an account?

Yes. Garden swaps are wallet to wallet with no signup, no KYC, and no account. Connect, swap, done.

What is the cheapest way to convert WBTC to BTC?

Atomic swaps tend to be the cheapest because there's no intermediate asset or pool fee stacking. On live quotes for 1 WBTC, Garden's network fee was the cheapest.

Do I need to go through BitGo to unwrap WBTC?

No. Official unwrapping through BitGo is only available to approved merchants. Regular holders convert WBTC to BTC through a swap, and Garden does that in one atomic step.

Why does WBTC sometimes trade slightly below BTC?

Market pricing reflects the custody risk and redemption friction of the wrapped version. The peg usually holds within a few basis points, but the small discount is the market pricing trust.

Can AI agents or apps use this route programmatically?

Yes. The same WBTC to BTC routes are available through the Garden API, so wallets, apps, and agents can quote and execute swaps without holding user funds.
