DAI is overcollateralized. Users lock approved collateral like ETH, staked ETH, and tokenized real-world assets into onchain vaults and mint DAI against it, always backed by more value than the DAI issued. If collateral falls below the required ratio, automated liquidations restore solvency, and a Peg Stability Module absorbs small deviations by letting users swap USDC for DAI one to one.
In 2024, MakerDAO rebranded to Sky and launched USDS, an upgraded sister stablecoin. Both tokens circulate side by side in 2026, backed by the same collateral pool and convertible one to one through Sky's converter with no fee in either direction. Major exchanges migrated user balances to USDS during 2026, with Binance auto-converting DAI balances in April and Coinbase in May. DAI continues to be minted, redeemed, and supported, and remains available through onchain routes.
DAI's original contracts are immutable and carry no freeze function, while USDS launched with freeze functionality. DAI has been integrated across defi protocols since 2017 and continues to circulate alongside USDS with roughly $4.6B in supply.
DAI is used as a trading pair and collateral asset across defi, as a decentralized dollar for savings and payments, and as a settlement asset in protocols that have integrated it since 2017. The Dai Savings Rate lets holders earn onchain yield while holding the token.
Garden uses Hashed Timelock Contracts (HTLCs) and an intents-based solver network to enable atomic cross-chain swaps.
You receive DAI directly on Ethereum.
Either both sides of the swap complete, or your BTC is refunded.
Solvers fill your swap request at the best execution path across liquidity sources.
Nobody. Your BTC sits in a Hash Time-Locked Contract that only you and the solver filling your swap can act on. The solver is paid only after DAI is delivered on Ethereum, and if delivery does not happen within the timelock, the contract refunds your BTC automatically. Garden cannot access, freeze, or redirect funds at any stage.
No. Garden has no accounts and no identity checks. You connect a wallet, swap, and the DAI arrives in that wallet. Complying with the laws that apply to you remains your responsibility.
Yes. The route runs both ways. Set DAI on Ethereum as the send asset and BTC as the receive asset in the Garden app, or exit into any other supported asset on any supported chain.
Assets across 14+ chains route into DAI on Garden. Alongside native BTC, WBTC, SOL, USDC, USDT, and more. The routes page carries the live list.
Around 10 minutes for most swaps, since settlement waits on one Bitcoin confirmation before DAI is released on Ethereum.
The HTLC refunds your BTC to your recovery address automatically. Settlement is atomic, either both sides complete or neither does, so funds are never stranded mid-swap.
