Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum that represents Bitcoin at a 1:1 ratio. It was launched in 2019 to bring Bitcoin’s liquidity to Ethereum and DeFi. WBTC is always backed by BTC reserves, ensuring that the circulating supply of WBTC matches locked Bitcoin onchain.
WBTC operates through a two-layer trust model:
Merchants (e.g., Kyber, Ren Protocol) handle user requests to mint or burn WBTC. They initiate transactions and verify user identity (KYC/AML compliance).
Custodians (e.g., BitGo) hold the actual BTC reserves. They sign multi-sig transactions to lock BTC and mint WBTC on Ethereum, or unlock BTC when WBTC is burned.
WBTC follows the ERC-20 standard, which makes it interoperable across all Ethereum-based protocols.
Minting and burning WBTC involves interacting with audited Ethereum contracts that log supply changes transparently.
Custodian BTC addresses and Ethereum smart contracts are fully auditable in real time.
Governance is handled by WBTC DAO, consisting of custodians, merchants, and ecosystem members. They vote on protocol changes, new members, and operational policies.
BTC reserves are secured with multi-signature schemes, reducing single-entity control and risk of theft.
Garden uses Hashed Timelock Contracts (HTLCs) and an intents-based solver network to enable atomic cross-chain swaps.
You receive your asset directly without derivatives or wrapped tokens.
Either both sides of the swap complete, or your asset is refunded.
Solvers fill your swap request at the best execution path across liquidity sources.
Garden executes a peer-to-peer atomic swap between BTC on Bitcoin and WBTC on Ethereum using Hashed Timelock Contracts (HTLCs). Either both sides of the swap finalize, or your BTC is refunded.
On average 2–5 minutes, depending on Bitcoin block confirmation. Settlement on Ethereum is nearly instant once BTC is locked.
Yes. Garden supports the reverse route. WBTC on Ethereum is swapped back for native BTC via the same HTLC mechanism.
Garden is fully non-custodial. Funds are locked in HTLCs until both sides complete. If the solver fails to deliver WBTC, your BTC is automatically refunded.
