What is Tempo?

Tempo went live on mainnet on March 18, 2026 after a public testnet phase. It is fully EVM-compatible, so standard Ethereum tools and wallets work out of the box. Finality lands in roughly 0.6 seconds, testnet benchmarks reached about 20,000 transactions per second with an architectural target above 100,000, and the design was shaped with partners including Visa, Shopify, OpenAI, and Deutsche Bank. The network is backed by a $500M raise, with Stripe and Visa among its first validators.

On Tempo, gas fees are paid directly using any supported USD-denominated stablecoin (such as USDC, USDT, or frxUSD) rather than a volatile native token. A protocol native feature called the Fee AMM automatically swaps your chosen stablecoin behind the scenes into the specific token required by the network's validators. If you do not specify a preferred fee token, the network simply uses PathUSD as its default fallback gas asset.

PathUSD is a US dollar-denominated stablecoin on Tempo. It serves as the network's default fallback gas asset, meaning transactions are paid in PathUSD whenever no other fee token is specified, and it is supported across the Tempo ecosystem, including fiat on-ramps like MoonPay. Bridging with Garden delivers PathUSD directly to your wallet on Tempo.

Tempo launched with a Machine Payments Protocol that lets software and AI agents pay for services autonomously, alongside payment-native features like memos and smart accounts.

frequently asked questions

Yes. Garden is a non-custodial protocol, so you connect your own wallet and swap directly, with no account signup or identity verification. You remain responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you.

Yes. Garden uses Hash Time-Locked Contracts (HTLCs) for atomic settlement. Your BTC is locked in an HTLC until a solver delivers PathUSD on Tempo, and if the solver fails to deliver within the timelock, your BTC is automatically refunded. Garden cannot access, freeze, or redirect your funds at any stage.

Select PathUSD on Tempo as the send asset and BTC as the receive asset in the Garden app. The same atomic swap mechanism works in both directions, and you can also exit to any other supported asset on any supported chain.

Transaction time depends on Bitcoin confirmation time. Most swaps complete within around 10 minutes, since the swap waits on one Bitcoin confirmation before PathUSD is released on Tempo. Swaps from faster chains settle in seconds.

Failed transactions trigger automatic refunds to your recovery address. The HTLC contract ensures atomic settlement, both sides complete or neither does. No funds are locked indefinitely.
